I Thought I Didn’t Need Short Term Health Insurance…
Short term health insurance seemed like a waste of money. I had just quit my job and was actively searching for a new one — I thought for sure that I would land something in a matter of weeks, and that they would then provide me with a subsidized plan so that I would have coverage again. Why did I need a short term health insurance plan when my job search was going so well? That was my thinking up until the day I suffered from a tragic accident while driving to the market.
Short Term Health Insurance Would Have Helped At The Time Of The Accident
Like any other day, I was driving down to the market from my apartment, on the same road, in the same car, taking the same route. As I was crossing a large intersection between my apartment and the main road, a car ran a red light and smashed into the side of my car — my side.
The last thing I remember was being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. When I finally opened my eyes, I was lying in a hospital bed with doctors and nurses around me. “Do you have insurance,” one of nurses asked, as soon as my eyes opened. I shook my head, and instead of thinking about my injuries, I imagined the enormous medical bill that they would give me upon my discharge from the hospital.
Short Term Health Insurance Would Have Been Cheaper Than Not Having Insurance
I didn’t want short term health insurance because I didn’t want to spend the extra cash on something I thought was pointless. Little did I know that after the emergency care, the ambulance and all of the lab work, x-ray and prescription pain killers from the accident, I would end up paying thousands of dollars.
